Good Morning, It's a start to another great day. We stayed last night at a Motel 6 in El Reno, OK. Pretty decent place.
Brenda is ready to go!
Here is where we had breakfast.
This is us at breakfast. We bought this GPS program that Melba the Mouth told us about and we are both trying to figure out how it works. The easiest part about this program was buying it.
Alright think we got it we are setting it up on the bikes and we are ready to ride!
Woohoo! We are on Historic Route 66. This old two land road has grass growing in the center lane.
Ok maybe we have not quite figured this out yet. The GPS was very angry and continued telling us we needed to turn around. So we tried to program it a different way. I think we got it now.
Check out this really cool Subway
Oh yeah, while Brenda is taking pictures of the really cool Subway, Dad and I are working on the GPS again.
We got it! We are off again.
FAIL!!!!
Check out this really cool bridge. We don't know the name of it but thanks to a few signs around we managed to get back on 66.
A few more pics of 66.
Welcome to Texas!
190 ft. Cross in Groom, TX
The Big Texan in Amarillo, TX
Excellent food and atmosphere.
We have finally figured out portion of the program. We are on 66 in Texas to see a Mural painted on the side of a building. That ended up being a total waste. The mural was faded and peeling and they had a 10ft. fence in front of it. We did not even take the pic. Good news of this is the GPS worked.
Another sight to see on 66 is the Bates Motel sign, which is no longer there. Not a total loss though someone took the time to make this homemade one.
Fantastic stop here in Adrian, TX. This is also the midpoint of Route 66. At this point in the Mother Road you are halfway between California and Chicago. We got to meet the owner of Sunflower station. Fran. She used to own the Mid point cafe but decided to retire and sold it and opened this shop next door. Fran was one of the many wonderful people that Disney/Pixar met when they traveled Route 66 to create the movie Cars. The character Flo was created to represent Fran.
Welcome to New Mexico!
This is in the town of Tucumcari, NM this is our final destination for today.
This is the hotel we stayed at.
Here is where we had dinner. Hopping little place then after further investigation we think this is the only place to eat.
Gnorbert did not behave here this evening.
Check out the Wind Turbine. They are huge.
Below is the whole reason I wanted to stay in Tucumcari. I have seen in all the books and the internet the neon signs and the lights from the motels and they were gawdy yet beautiful in their own quirkey way. We drove up and down the whole strip and below are the only places lit up.
This is our Hotel all lit up. Thanks to Fran who called here and got us a room.
Although there were only 4 places lit up I am still pleased we stayed here. I got to finally see the Blue Swallow motel all lit up worth it all. This was another great day for riding no rain and no donations to the road gods. Yester day we gave the GPS mount and a brandnew Harley doo-rag.
